Delete a payment method¶
Remove a saved payment method for good. Unlike deactivating one, this cannot be undone.
Before you start¶
The method must not currently be used by an active recurring payment or scheduled payment — see If it does not work below for what to do if it is.
Steps¶
- Open the payment method record.
- Click Delete.
- Confirm.
What you should see¶
The method disappears from the customer's saved payment methods and can no longer be charged.
This cannot be undone
Once deleted, a payment method is gone. If you are not certain, deactivate it instead — that can be reversed.
If it does not work¶
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| "This payment method is referenced by an active recurring payment or schedule and cannot be deleted." | The method is still in use. Pausing a recurring payment does not free it up — only aborting it, or letting it complete, does | Abort the recurring payment, or cancel the schedule, then try again — or deactivate the method and choose a replacement instead |
| "Deleting this payment method is not supported for its gateway. Please deactivate it instead." | Not every gateway supports removing a stored method remotely | Deactivate it instead — it will stop being usable, even though the record stays |
| You deleted a method that turned out to be needed | Deletion cannot be reversed | Save a new payment method for the customer |
| Deleting an already-deleted method | The method was already removed | Nothing to do — ChargeOn treats this as already done, not an error |
